Notes

Occasional writing about a small homelab, backups and tools I keep coming back to.

Rebuilding the backup box

March

The old NAS finally gave up after nine years. Instead of replacing it with another appliance I put a used mini-PC next to the router, added two mirrored disks and a nightly job that pulls snapshots from the laptops. It is slower than the old one on paper and noticeably faster in practice, mostly because nothing on it is doing anything I did not ask for.

Lesson relearned: restores are the only backups that count. I now restore one random file every Sunday and note the time it took.

A shell alias I actually use

January

Most aliases die within a week. The one that survived is a two-line function that opens the last file I edited in the current project. Nothing clever, it just removes the one search I did fifty times a day.

On keeping notes

December

Plain text files, one folder, a date in the name. Every fancier system I tried eventually became a place where notes go to be forgotten. The boring one is still here.
